There are many qualities that make a good citizen, children from around the Country explain what they think makes a good citizen. Can you think of any more ?

Who is a good citizen?

From Wimbledon Park 1st:

  • Someone who has 'empathy' for other people
  • Someone who cares and shares
  • Someone who respects people
  • Someone who understands that rules are made for good reasons and does not break them
  • Someone who judges people on their behavior not on their colour or appearance
  • Someone who cares about the community and our world

From Bamford Primary:

  • "Florence Nightingale"
  • "A good citizen can be anyone from around the world"
  • "David Essex is a good citizen because he is a singer. A good citizen is positive"

From Ilfracombe Junior:

  • "A good citizen would take part in out of school activities"
  • "Being a good citizen means being polite and well mannered being friendly and helping old and young people"

  • Everywhere! Every country in the world!

Why do we need good citizens?

From Wimbledon Park 1st:

  • We need good citizens to help people who cannot help themselves
  • We need good citizens to help make our world a happier place - through sharing ideas and making sensible rules
  • We need good citizens who appreciate the good things in our world who are responsible for caring for them by recycling and conservation
  • We need good citizens who respect, tolerate, understand and care for each other

When do you become a good citizen?

  • Cares for himself / herself
  • Cares for other people
  • Shares things
  • Doesn't hurt anyone
  • Is kind and thoughtful
  • Helps people who need help
  • Has a generous spirit
  • Has empathy

From Bamford Primary:

  • "You can become a good citizen by joining in games and clubs and mixing with other people"
  • "A good citizen is somebody you can rely on. Someone who is confident and tries to help others"
  • "You can become a good citizen by helping someone. By being kind, polite and considerate. Someone who is caring"

From Ilfracombe Junior:

  • "Being a good citizen means treating people and their belongings with respect"
  • "Part of citizenship is being tidy and tidying up where you have been"
  • "Has been a good citizen when she wrote to Westward Ho Town Council and asked them to report a children's roundabout. The council did this and wrote back to say thank you for pointing it out"
  • "I became a better citizen when I saw somebody throw litter in the High Street next to the bin. I asked them to pick it up and he did!"
  • "Our firemen are good citizens because they are raising money for a girl who is very ill, so she can travel to Disneyland."
