The Role of Police in Schools
Carefully selected and trained Police Officers have a role in schools
to foster god relations and encourage good citizenship. Establishing good
relations at an early age is more likely to foster the right attitude in
the years that follow as the children develop and will help remove fear,
suspicion and hostility.
Having established the role of the Police in schools it is vitally important to ensure our input is professional. It is with this in mind that a carefully prepared and properly structured package which will standardise our input has been prepared.
It should be emphasised that Police Officers visit schools at the invitation of Head teachers. Consultation should be made with the teaching staff as well before the visit takes place. Careful planning and consultation is essential
Try to plan every minute beforehand but be prepared to be flexible:
- Know What you are trying to achieve
- Know The subject you are talking about
- Know As much as possible about the group you are talking to, ie: standard of intelligence etc
Officers attending schools should do so in uniform and be in possession of items of uniform equipment.
